Week in Review: July 6th

Week in Review

Week in Review is a weekly post in which I wrap up what’s happening in my life, in books, and in blogging (inspired by Anna @ Anna Reads)!

What I Did:

on the fence happinessTo all of my American readers out there – I hope you had/are having a great holiday weekend! I went to my local parade and ate delicious breakfast pizza and topped that off with mouthwatering fried dough. I love that stuff… My mom and I drove out to an indie we never visited, and while their selection was okay, we weren’t fond of the staff, who were somewhat pushy and rude. 😦 They were also selling old ARCs, which pretty much immediately put me off to the store. We were disappointed, but are planning more little excursions to other indies this summer, and my vacation is coming up so I’m very excited to visit the indie there that I know and love! After that I went to Barnes and Noble (as usual!) on Tuesday, and was sad to see that they didn’t have On the Fence by Kasie West, which was releasing that day. Eventually I went back later in the week and was triumphant in purchasing a copy!

Links I Loved:

  • Aimee and Dyan @ Deadly Darlings are looking for co-bloggers! If you’re interested blogging for the first time, or looking to blog with others, definitely check out their post and see if their blog may be the right fit for you!
  • Miguel @ The Quirky Reader posted a much better review and discussion of Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo than mine.
  • Asma @ IceyBooks wrote an awesome gif-post about how she is becoming a lover of contemporary after preferring fantasy. The same thing happened to me, so naturally I love her post!
  • Christine from polandbananasBOOKS and Kat from Katytastic made a hilarious discussion video about the season 4 premiere of TEEN WOLF, which you all know I watch and obsess over. If you’ve seen the premiere episode you must watch this!

Books I Added to My Shelves:

IMG_4297Bought:

Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan – The cover. It glows in the dark. ❤
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck – For school summer reading…yay…
On the Fence by Kasie West – SO. FREAKING. EXCITED. (I actually already read this now and my review will be up on Monday!)

For Review:

How We Fall by Kate Brauning (from Edelweiss) – You don’t know how excited I was when I saw I was accepted for this!
The Fog of Forgetting by G.A. Morgan (from Publisher) – I was contacted by the publisher and asked if I’d like to review this one. I’m also going to be a part of the blog tour (post up this Tues. with my review!). It’s more middle grade, but it’s being compared to adventure stories like Harry Potter and Narnia so I was like “Ummm YES!”
Frozen by Melissa de la Cruz and Michael Johnston (from NetGalley) – Been wanting to read this one since I first heard about it back when it was released. This was a “Read Now” on NetGalley so I jumped at the chance!

Recently Finished and Currently Reading:

I finished a 3 books this week: Fiendish by Brenna Yovanoff, Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson, and On the Fence by Kasie West. Every single one of them was either really good or AMAZING so I was happy with my reading this week for sure! I’m currently reading The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (for school), and am starting The Fog of Forgetting by G.A. Morgan very soon!

On My Blog:

I hope you all had a wonderful week! Let me know all about it in the comments!

  1. I so, so, so love On the Fence. Who am I kidding… I love EVERYTHING she writes! That girl can do no wrong in my eyes. 🙂 I hope you enjoy your new books!! And Happy Belated 4th of July to you! I hope you’re enjoying the holiday weekend! 🙂

  2. Happy Fourth! 🙂 I always hated having to read a book, kinda ruins it for me.

I’ve never heard the term indie in relation to a store before. Is it a shop that sells independently published books?

    1. Thanks you too! And yeah unfortunately schools don’t realize that…

No, indies are independent bookstores. Normally just small, locally owned ones. So they’re owned by a person as opposed to chain stores like Barnes and Noble, Chapters, Indigo, etc.

  3. Teen Wolf is the absolute best! haha I obsess over it a little too much and I am in love with Dylan O’Brien. I am so mad that I haven’t watched any of the new episodes yet because I watch it with Autumn @ Kitty Cat Reads and she has been too busy so we have been waiting so we can watch them together! I also got Frozen from netgalley and can’t wait to read it! Sounds like you had a great weekend and I can’t wait until you start How We Fall so I can see what you think 🙂

    1. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the new season but I’m really enjoying it so far! I’m a Stydia shipper though so I of course I’m upset about how that’s moving along…but oh well! I really excited to read How We Fall as well but I think I’m going to wait a little closer to the release date. 🙂

  4. Ahh i hope you enjoy How We Fall! I’ve been hearing about that one a lot on the blogosphere today! I’m also pretty jealous you got your hands on On The Fence! I still havent bought my copy but everyone loves it soo i know you and me both will! 🙂

  5. Oh, I haven’t read Mr. Penumbra’s yet but my friend has and said it was really good though! I’m not super interested it but honestly I might just get it because of the glow-in-the-dark cover! Haha, I just think that’s like the coolest thing on Earth. And I saw the Christine & Kat Teen Wolf video but I haven’t seen the episode yet so I’m holding off on watching the video until I do. But having watched their other videos, I’m sure it was very hilarious! Have a great week! 🙂

  6. That’s so disappointing to hear about that used bookstore – I’d have walked out too :/ But I’m glad you were able to find On the Fence! I’ve read West’s Pivot Point, but none of her contemporary stuff. Hope you enjoy it!

  7. I want a copy of On the Fence too! I’m reading The Kiss of Deception now so I’ll hold off reading your review of it 🙂 And thanks for sharing those wonderful links with us! Have a great week ahead. Thanks for stopping by my Sunday Post 🙂

  8. Psssh, your discussion post was pretty awesome too Emily! 😉 And EEEEP. I just squealed when I saw Mr. Penumbra’s here! It’s definitely one of my favourite books of this year and I think you’ll love it too because there were so many typography references. 😀 I’m really going to find a copy of Tiger Lily and On the Fence this time. 🙂

    1. Aww thanks 😉 So glad to hear you like Mr. Penumbra’s! I’ve heard it’s great so I’m definitely excited to read it. AHH TYPOGRAPHY references!! I had no idea that was a part of it. 10x more excited to read it 😀

  9. I went to my local Barnes & Noble to pick up a copy of On The Fence on Tuesday and unfortunately it wasn’t out there either 😦 I’m planning to go back again this week!

Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore sounds awesome and the fact that it has a glow-in-the-dark cover is super cool! I wasn’t a fan of The Grapes of Wrath at all, but hopefully you’ll enjoy it more. I also had to read it as summer reading for school.

That new cover for Frozen is really interesting, too. From a glance, I thought it was the cover of a book about Frozen (the movie), lol 🙂

    1. I hope you can get your hands on a copy soon!

Sorry to hear that you didn’t like The Grapes of Wrath. I’m not either but I’m only a little ways in. I’m trying to keep an open mind.

And yes I do love that new cover. I never even thought about the movie when it came to the cover but now that you mention it I totally see it! 🙂

  10. I’ve seen How We Fall on a couple of blogs this week. I hadn’t heard of it before, but now I’m curious to check it out. Also, doesn’t the cover remind you of Isla and the Happily Ever After.

I still need to read On the Fence. I’m glad you enjoyed it so much!

I'd love to hear what you have to say!
